Nat Gas Now: Cleaner, American Energy

Nat Gas Now: Cleaner, American Energy
Wednesday, Feb 23

Amid growing uncertainty about global energy stability, producing more domestic energy is top of mind for all Americans. Natural gas is one cleaner, American energy source. So is renewable energy, like wind and solar. We talk frequently in this blog about the benefits of natural gas. And, we appreciate the benefits of renewable energy and all contributors to U.S. energy security. In this edition of Nat Gas Now, we explore the key supporting role that nat gas plays in the development of renewable energy in this country.

Natural gas is a critical partner to wind and solar electricity generation, providing clean, reliable power on overcast or calm wind days. And, without question, we will need more energy from many sources to power our nation's growing needs. By 2035, the U.S. will need 14 percent more energy than it did in 2008, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. EIA forecasts that wind and solar's combined share of the U.S. energy mix will more than double over that period. However, the federal agency also projects that these sources will still account for less than 3 percent of total U.S. energy use in 25 years' time.

As renewable energy advances, natural gas is ready now to play a growing role in powering our nation. And, many wind and solar projects are co-locating with natural gas facilities to take full advantage of the two energy sources' complementary roles. Even the NFL is warming up to natural gas. The Philadelphia Eagles recently announced they are greening their stadium with a cogeneration plant that will be powered by 70 percent natural gas and 30 percent solar and wind.

Natural gas is clean, abundant and ours. And, it's a critical partner to the development of more American energy, like wind and solar. It's one more compelling and timely reason to join the call for Nat Gas Now!
