Energy Security

Why when the U.S. is the envy of the world for our natural abundance of natural gas, are we importing more than 10 million barrels of oil each day - much of it from countries whose interests run counter to our own?

It's time for a change. Approximately 98 percent of the natural gas we use in America comes from right here in North America. Greater reliance on our own vast domestic supplies of clean natural gas can advance our national security and create clean energy jobs here at home.

Using more natural gas for transportation can make a real difference. In fact, replacing 3.5 million heavy-duty vehicles with natural gas vehicles by 2035 would save more than 1.2 million barrels of oil per day-more than the United States imported from either Venezuela or Saudi Arabia in 2009.

"Dependence on imported oil, particularly from the Middle East, has become the elephant in the foreign policy living room, an overriding strategic consideration composed of a multitude of issues."(Lieutenant Colonel John M. Amidon, United States Air Force)
